A State Department official stated that India is a strategic partner with whom the US engages in a full and frank dialogue. President Donald Trump has been clear with New Delhi on his concerns over its purchase of Russian oil and the trade imbalance with Washington. The official said, "The President has been very clear in terms of the concerns he has regarding the trade imbalance, regarding the concerns he has when it comes to the purchase of Russian oil." These comments came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit from August 31st to September 1st, his first visit in 7 years. India maintains its decision to buy Russian oil ensures energy security and price stability, noting the price was decided by the West. India has conveyed this to US authorities. President Trump believes Indian oil purchases fuel the Russian war machine, a theory questioned given other countries, including NATO allies, also buy Russian oil. Trump has stated no further negotiation will occur until the issue is resolved. India remains committed to constructive engagement with the United States.
