A 25% tariff imposed by the US on India is being called a ‘bombshell’ for the strategic partnership. National Security Analyst Derek J. Grossman states the move is a result of President Trump’s frustration with the escalating war in Ukraine and India’s import of discounted Russian oil. Grossman says, "this was a clear shot across the bow that India’s position of trying to have its cake and eat it too is simply not going to work." The development raises questions about India’s role in the US Indo-Pacific strategy to counter China. This tariff comes despite India’s firm stance on non-alignment and its zero-tolerance policy on terrorism, previously demonstrated during Operation Sindoor. While New Delhi has shown a patient approach, these widening cracks could disrupt a historically strong and cooperative relationship between the two democracies.
