At least eight people were injured in South Korea after a shell from ongoing military exercises hit a civilian neighbourhood in Pocheon, near the border with North Korea. Fire officials said that four people were seriously hurt, and several homes and a church were damaged. South Korea and the United States were conducting joint live-fire drills nearby. Authorities believe the shell may have been fired accidentally by a fighter jet taking part in the exercises. South Korea’s defence ministry is yet to issue a statement on the incident. In another development, In a major policy shift, the United States has held secret talks with Hamas to secure the release of all hostages still held in Gaza. This is the 1st time Washington has directly spoken to Hamas since 1997 removing Qatar as a mediator. This breaks Washington’s decades-old stance of not negotiating with groups on its terror list. President Trump has directly warned Hamas, saying there will be “hell to pay” if all hostages, including the remains of dead ones, are not released immediately.
