Canada and France have opened new consulates in Nuuk, signalling solidarity with Denmark amid repeated statements by US President Donald Trump suggesting Washington should take control of Greenland. Canada formally inaugurated its first diplomatic outpost in the territory as a senior delegation, including Governor General Mary Simon and Foreign Minister Anita Anand, travelled to Nuuk. Anand said the consulate symbolises Canada’s long-term commitment to stand with Greenland and Denmark. France opened its own consulate the same day, marking a historic expansion of foreign engagement in Greenland, where until now only Iceland and the United States maintained formal consular services. The move is seen as a show of continued NATO support for Greenland after Trump later softened his remarks, saying he is exploring a potential deal following talks with Denmark, European allies and Canada.
