In a major military operation on the night of March 17-18, the United States dropped multiple GBU-72 Advanced 5K Penetrator bunker buster bombs on Iranian military installations near the Strait of Hormuz. According to US Central Command, multiple 5,000-pound deep penetration munitions were deployed by B-2 Spirit stealth bombers and F-15 Strike Eagle fighter jets. The bunker buster bombs are designed with hardened steel casing to drill deep into the ground through reinforced concrete before detonating. Each bomb costs approximately 288,000 US dollars and uses GPS guidance for pinpoint accuracy. The primary objective was to neutralise threats to international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes targeted Iranian missile launch sites and underground storage silos housing anti-ship cruise missiles and coastal defence cruise missiles. US Central Command stated these missiles posed a threat to international shipping and naval vessels. The Strait of Hormuz, barely 33 kilometres wide at its choke point, remains a critical flashpoint with Iran deploying sea-skimming missiles capable of evading radar and striking slow-moving ships.
