A major diplomatic row is brewing between India and the United States over a stalled trade deal. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has claimed the deal failed because Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not make a crucial phone call to President Donald Trump. In a podcast, Lutnick stated, ‘You have to have Modi call the president and they were uncomfortable doing it. So Modi didn’t call’. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has refuted this, calling the characterisation ‘not accurate’ and noting that the two leaders spoke eight times in 2025. The dispute comes amid threats of a new US bill that could impose tariffs of up to 500% on countries buying Russian oil, a move seen as targeting India. The uncertainty has rattled Indian markets, with the Sensex and Nifty seeing sharp declines.
