The United States has accused China of conducting a covert nuclear explosive test in 2020 and called for a new, broader arms control treaty that would also include Russia. Speaking at a disarmament conference in Geneva, U.S. officials alleged that Beijing attempted to conceal the test. China rejected the accusation, saying Washington was exaggerating what it described as a so-called “China nuclear threat”. The claims surfaced a day after the New START treaty expired, leaving the United States and Russia without binding limits on their strategic nuclear arsenals for the first time in more than five decades. The expiry has raised concerns among arms control experts over a growing global nuclear regulation vacuum.
