The United States has conducted bombing raids on Iran’s Kharg Island, a critical oil export terminal that accounts for 90 per cent of Iran’s oil shipments. President Donald Trump stated the strikes did not completely destroy the oil infrastructure but warned Iran against interfering with ship passage in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump described them as the most powerful bombing raids in history and reiterated that Iran’s plans to target Israel and dominate the Middle East have been thwarted. This marks the first major attack on Kharg Island since the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. The island is strategically located near the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 to 30 per cent of the world’s energy passes. Iran claims to have blockaded the strait, intensifying the global energy crisis. The conflict is now in its 15th day, with oil infrastructure repeatedly targeted by both sides.
