Washington has delivered a blunt message to its NATO allies: Europe must take over the majority of the alliance’s conventional defence capabilities by 2027 — or risk the U.S. withdrawing from key coordination mechanisms.
According to officials familiar with a high-level Pentagon briefing, the deadline stunned several European delegations, who say replacing critical U.S. intelligence, surveillance and missile capabilities within two years is unrealistic.
The Pentagon warning comes as NATO faces equipment shortages, production delays, and huge gaps in air defence, drones, cyber systems and munitions.
