Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sparked a political row by describing Delhi’s air quality as a ‘gas chamber’ during an address in Gorakhpur. Speaking at the inauguration of the fifth Kalyan Mandapam, Adityanath claimed that while Uttar Pradesh offers a healthier environment, Delhi’s pollution has made breathing difficult, particularly for children and the elderly. He noted that ‘doctors are suggesting the children not to go out’ and advised vulnerable groups to stay indoors. These remarks have triggered internal friction within the BJP, as Delhi is currently governed by fellow party member Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress, have labelled the comments a ‘public admission of failure’ regarding the BJP’s governance in the national capital. Critics also pointed out that NCR cities like Noida and Ghaziabad, under Adityanath’s jurisdiction, continue to record severe pollution levels. The Rekha Gupta government, nearing its first anniversary, has yet to officially respond to the critique from the neighbouring state’s leadership.
