Following a massive cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, a Union Minister described the event as a ‘calamity of a scale which was never witnessed in this part of the country’. Rescue and relief operations are underway, personally monitored by the Prime Minister. However, inclement weather has hampered air operations, delaying the arrival of helicopters with equipment. The official death toll has been identified as 53, with a similar number of critically injured shifted for medical care. It is feared that a large number of people, potentially around 200, may still be trapped under the debris at the site where many pilgrims were dining. The disaster also washed away a newly completed motorable bridge that was awaiting inauguration. The government has assured that all necessary assistance and rehabilitation measures will be undertaken.
