Ukraine's Operation Spiderweb: How Did Ukraine Attack Russian Bases And What Did It Achieve?

In perhaps the boldest and largest counter-attack of the 3-year long war, Ukraine on Sunday, attacked multiple military bases across Russia with a series of drone strikes. The attack, experts say, is remarkable for both its scale and complexity, with Ukrainian officials claiming that it was in planning for around one and a half years.
Ukraine’s ‘Operation Spiderweb’ reportedly involved smuggling weaponised drones into Russia months before the actual attack took place. These drones were loaded onto trucks in wooden crates that could be remotely opened.
While the exact details are unclear, these crates were then placed in the vicinity of multiple bases. Some of these bases, including once in eastern Siberia, are thousands of kilometres away from Ukraine. While both Russia and Ukraine have confirmed some of the details of the attack, it is not immediately possible to verify just how successful the attack was in destroying Russian military assets. Ukraine claims the attack hit at least 40 Russian aircraft, a heavy blow that supposedly cost the Russians over $7 billion in damages.
