United States and NATO military planners are exploring post-conflict security guarantees for Ukraine following a pledge from Donald Trump to help protect the country. The plans reportedly go beyond weapons supply, with the possibility of European troops being deployed in some form to create a credible deterrence against further Russian action. However, Russia has drawn clear red lines, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stating that the presence of NATO troops on Ukrainian soil is not acceptable. "…bringing of NATO troops on Ukrainian soil as part of a peace guarantee or any possible peace deal will not be acceptable to Russia." Ukraine is seeking robust guarantees, with President Volodymyr Zelensky referencing the failure of the 1994 security assurances. A committee involving Ukrainian, NATO, and European leaders is expected to work out the details of this new security arrangement.
