Hearing a plea against Delhi High Court’s order to stay the release of the controversial film Udaipur Files, the Supreme Court has refused to over-rule that order. In short, the release of the film is still stayed. The apex court will now wait for the centre to review the film first.
A bench led by Justice Surya Kant said the right to life under Article 21 takes precedence over the right to free speech under Article 19. The Court asked all parties to present their views to the government-appointed statutory committee, which has been tasked with reviewing the matter urgently.
"We must wait for the government’s viewpoint," Justice Kant remarked. "Let the committee make its decision without delay."
The film Udaipur Files, which was previously titled Gyanvapi Files is said to be based on the murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal. Petitioners argue the film amounts to hate speech against a specific community.
