The U.S. has fact-checked and refuted reports of a new missile sale to Pakistan. The U.S. Embassy in Delhi declared reports of the Pakistan Air Force receiving new AMRAAM missiles under a $2.51 billion deal as "fake news". Washington clarified that there are no new missile deliveries; the contract is for a sustainment programme and does not represent a capability enhancement. The U.S. Department of War also denied authorising an upgraded AMRAAM system for Pakistan’s F-16 fleet. However, the sale reportedly involves the AIM-120C-8 model, a significantly more advanced missile than the AIM-120C-5 Pakistan acquired in 2006. This newer variant has a range of nearly 180 kilometres, a substantial increase from the older missile’s approximate 110-kilometre range, which complicates the definition of a ‘new’ capability.
