US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on all Indian goods, effective from the 1st of August. The move casts a shadow over ongoing trade negotiations, with Trump citing India’s high tariffs and non-monetary trade barriers. An additional penalty was also announced, linked to India’s purchase of military equipment and energy from Russia. The development comes even as the US stands as India’s largest trade partner, with bilateral trade recorded at $128 billion in 2024. Trump stated, “India has been a good friend, but India has charged basically more tariffs than almost any other country.” Despite the announcement, a sixth round of trade talks over contentious issues is scheduled for the last week of August, leaving some hope for a resolution.
