In a significant legal setback for the US administration, the Supreme Court has ruled Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff regime illegal. Speaking to India Today, Daniel Block, Senior Editor of Foreign Affairs, described the ruling as ‘a huge loss’ and noted it marks a rare instance where a generally friendly court told the President he had ‘gone beyond your powers’. Block highlighted that replicating the tariffs through Congress would be ‘legislatively difficult’ due to intense opposition. Ray Locker, reporting from Washington, pointed out that the US economy grew only 2.2% in 2025, largely due to the impact of these tariffs. Locker suggested that with the court’s 6-3 decision, including votes from Trump appointees, Congress now has ‘no incentive’ to support the President’s trade policies. The discussion also touched upon potential ‘weapons of mass distraction’, including possible military action in Iran, as the President faces increasing political and legal pressure following the November elections.
