The current situation regarding US tariffs on India raises concerns. The United States is imposing 50% tariffs on India, a move that highlights a perceived double standard. In 2024, the US encouraged countries to import Russian oil to stabilize the global economy. However, India is now being singled out for its Russian oil imports, which have contributed to global economic stability during periods of multiple wars and a pandemic. The economic contributions from India to the United States are substantial, including billions in annual earnings for US companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, Dell, Walmart, Citibank, JP Morgan, McKinsey, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson, along with significant earnings from Indian students. Donald Trump’s actions are seen as an attempt to pressure India, despite his own business interests in the country, such as Trump Towers. This approach risks alienating India, considered a key strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific. As stated, "It is ironic that India is being singled out this way and in a way that’s likely to alienate America’s best strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific." The Modi government faces limited flexibility due to domestic constituencies.
