The United States is set to impose a 100% tariff on patented and branded drug imports starting October 1st, an announcement made by Donald Trump. This new trade measure will not apply to companies that build manufacturing plants in America. The decision has significant implications for India’s pharmaceutical industry, which exported drugs worth over 10 billion dollars to the US in 2024-25. However, industry bodies like Pharmexcil state the impact will be minimal as nearly 90% of India’s pharma exports to the US are generic drugs, which remain unaffected.
