US President Donald Trump has announced a 100% tariff on branded and patented pharmaceutical products from India, set to take effect from October 1st. This measure is expected to impact approximately one billion dollars worth of Indian pharma exports. The United States is the largest single market for Indian pharmaceuticals, accounting for about a third of the country’s total pharma exports. While the shipments are predominantly generic drugs, the new tariffs target the branded and patented sector. Companies with manufacturing plants under construction in the US will be exempt. The move is viewed as a potential "arm twisting tactic by the Washington" to encourage domestic manufacturing. In anticipation, Indian export bodies have already begun exploring market diversification into Latin America and Africa.
