This new tariff will take effect in 21 days, specifically after August 27th. The US President has also threatened secondary sanctions on nations purchasing Russian oil. India has responded sharply, stating that the US targeting is unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable. India maintains that its oil imports are driven by market forces and are essential for ensuring the energy security of its 1.4 billion people. A key point highlighted is that "If India is being penalised to ensure the energy security of its own people, then this remains a non-negotiable position because you cannot negotiate your energy security." India has affirmed it will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests.
