US President Donald Trump has urged global allies including China, Japan, South Korea, France, and Britain to deploy warships to secure the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Trump stated that China should help because it receives around 90 per cent of its oil through the strait, adding that he wants clarity on Beijing’s stance before his planned visit to meet President Xi Jinping. He also stated that Britain initially refused to deploy ships despite being a key US ally, offering support only after Iran’s military capability had been reduced. The West Asia war has entered its 17th day, with the Strait of Hormuz being choked by Iran, impacting global oil supply routes. Alternative routes being considered include the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Saudi east-west pipeline with capacity of up to 7 million barrels per day, and the UAE’s Habshan-Fujairah pipeline with capacity of 1.8 million barrels per day.
