The United States is pressing India and other global allies to push back against China’s sweeping new export controls on rare earth minerals — essential components for advanced defense systems, electric vehicles, and tech industries.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned the dispute represents a "China versus the world" challenge as Beijing tightens restrictions on 12 out of 17 critical rare earth elements.
India finds itself in a delicate position, simultaneously targeted by steep US tariffs yet viewed as a key partner in securing diversified supply chains. To mitigate risks, India recently launched the National Critical Mineral Stockpile program aimed at building strategic reserves of these vital materials.
With China controlling roughly 70% of global rare earth mining and 90% of processing capacity, the balance of power in global technology and defence sectors hinges on how effectively India and its partners respond.
