Donald Trump came to office with tall promises to end several wars with his ‘dealmaking’ skills. Months into his second term, however, Trump’s peacemaker efforts are visibly failing. The war in Gaza continues without any clear indication of when and if it will end with a ceasefire. Meanwhile, his claims of having a hand in ending hostilities between India and Pakistan are dubious at best, and have been clearly rejected by New Delhi’s diplomats. Then there is the war in Ukraine, a war that Trump promised to end within hours of taking office. Threats, flattery, vague promises of trade deals and other such incentives have all failed to push Russia or Ukraine towards a functional ceasefire deal. Indeed, even US threats to simply walk away from the ceasefire talks and abandon the war and its participants have done little to tamp down the intensity of the fighting.
