U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he would impose a 10% baseline tariff on all imports to the U.S. and higher duties on several of the country’s biggest trading partners, escalating a trade war he initiated upon returning to the White House. New tariffs have been imposed on Russia, Canada, and North Korea, while Ukraine faces a 10% retaliatory tariff. A White House official told NOTUS’ Jasmine Wright that Russia is "not on this list due to sanctions from the Ukraine war already severing trade between the two countries." The sweeping duties aim to build new barriers around the world’s largest consumer economy, reversing decades of trade liberalization that have shaped global order. These tariffs are expected to provoke countermeasures from trading partners, which could result in significantly higher prices for various products, from bicycles to wine. Trump showcased a poster listing reciprocal tariffs, including 34% on China and 20% on the European Union, in response to duties on U.S. goods.
