Trump Slaps 25% Tariffs On 'Tough Negotiator' Modi's India | Donald Trump | Narendra Modi

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on all Indian goods starting August 1, 2025, citing frustration with stalled trade negotiations and India’s trade barriers. The move, coupled with an impending penalty for India’s energy and arms purchases from Russia, has heightened economic concerns in New Delhi, threatening India’s $86.5 billion export market to the U.S.

White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett, speaking to reporters, explained Trump’s rationale: “The President is frustrated with the lack of progress in trade talks with India but believes a 25% tariff will remedy the situation for American interests.” Trump, in a Truth Social post, criticized India’s high tariffs and “obnoxious” non-monetary trade barriers, noting its significant reliance on Russian military equipment and energy. “India is Russia’s largest energy buyer alongside China, at a time when we want Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine,” Trump wrote, announcing an additional, unspecified penalty to be detailed soon by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

India’s Commerce Ministry responded cautiously, stating it is “analyzing the implications” of the tariffs and remains committed to securing a fair trade deal. “We will take all necessary steps to protect our national interests, as we have with agreements like the recent UK trade pact,” the ministry said. Indian officials noted that five rounds of trade talks have occurred, with a U.S. delegation expected in Delhi by late August for a sixth round, aiming to finalize a bilateral agreement by fall.
