President Donald Trump’s conflicting statements on the United States’ military campaign in Iran have created confusion about the war’s trajectory and timeline. Trump first said the war could end very soon and that the US is ahead of schedule, but immediately added that the US would go further. A week ago, Trump had projected the operation would last four to five weeks. He also threatened to strike Iran even harder if Tehran interferes with oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The mixed messaging came after a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who offered proposals for quick settlement. Martin Wolf, chief economics commentator at the Financial Times, told NewsTrack that nobody knows what will happen next because the administration’s aims for the war are constantly changing. Wolf explained that if the conflict continues for four months with significant damage to oil supply, prices could reach 150 dollars per barrel, potentially reducing world GDP growth by 0.5 percent.
