US President Donald Trump has indicated that Cuba could be Washington’s next geopolitical target, stating that it is ‘just a matter of time’ before the US turns its attention to the communist-ruled island. This comes as Trump has ordered the capture of Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro, triggering regime change in Caracas, and pursues operations in Iran following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Relations between the United States and Cuba have historically been tense and have further deteriorated during Trump’s second term. Cuba remains strategically important to Washington due to its rich offshore oil reserves, large nickel deposits critical for defence manufacturing, and tourism potential. Concerns persist about China’s increasing investments in Cuban ports and Russian intelligence facilities on the island monitoring US naval activity.
