Trump Responds to MEA Statement on US-Russia Trade: Don’t Know Anything About It, Will Have to Check
US President Donald Trump responded to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement regarding criticism of India’s trade with Russia, particularly its oil imports. The MEA had issued a strongly worded statement, asserting that India’s energy purchases from Russia were driven by national interests and market conditions, and accused the US and EU of double standards for continuing their own trade with Russia while targeting India. The ministry highlighted that the US had previously encouraged India to buy Russian oil to stabilize global energy markets after the Ukraine conflict began in 2022, and noted that the EU’s trade with Russia in 2024 was significantly higher than India’s, with €67.5 billion in goods and €17.2 billion in services, alongside US imports of uranium, palladium, fertilizers, and chemicals from Russia.
In response, Trump, speaking to reporters, claimed he was unaware of the MEA’s statement, saying, “I don’t know anything about it, I will have to check.” This came after he had threatened to “substantially raise” tariffs on India for its continued purchase of Russian oil, accusing New Delhi of buying “massive amounts” and selling it for profit. Trump’s earlier actions included imposing a 25% tariff on Indian goods effective August 1, 2025, with additional penalties for India’s trade with Russia, including military equipment purchases. His remarks followed a pattern of escalating trade tensions, as he had previously called India’s economy “dead” and criticized its high tariffs on American goods. The MEA’s statement emphasized that India’s oil imports were a necessity to ensure affordable energy for its consumers, unlike Western nations whose trade with Russia lacked such “vital national compulsion.” India also rejected claims of halting Russian oil imports, with sources in the ministry clarifying that no such pause had occurred, countering earlier reports that Trump had cited as a “good step.” The exchange underscores ongoing tensions in US-India relations amid broader geopolitical dynamics involving Russia and the Ukraine conflict.
