Trita Parsi, Executive Vice President of Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, states that US President Donald Trump ‘never had a plan B’ for the Iran war and has been ‘either improvising the war or just following the lead of the Israelis’ since the conflict began. Parsi suggests Trump’s repeated threats and claims of diplomatic engagement are attempts to calm markets rather than reflections of actual negotiations, noting ‘there are no signs that there actually is anything serious happening on the diplomatic front.’ He emphasises that Trump’s offers to Iran amount to ‘terms of surrender’ detached from ground realities. Parsi observes that ‘it’s the Israelis that are driving the bus on this war, not Trump,’ pointing to Israeli strikes on Iranian universities as evidence of Israeli influence over the conduct of the war. He notes the real price of oil should be above 150 dollars but remains around 120 dollars due to Trump’s market interventions, though warns these may not succeed long-term without actual change on the ground.
