US President Donald Trump has instructed the Department of War to halt all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for the next five days, subject to ongoing negotiations. The announcement comes on day 24 of the Iran-Israel conflict, which has impacted global energy security due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. India Today’s Foreign Affairs Editor Geeta Mohan reports that Iran has not yet responded to American proposals for talks, having previously rejected outreach attempts. Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Araghchi, have warned that attacks on their power plants would amount to war crimes and trigger retaliation against West Asian allies of the US. The conflict has caused energy price spikes, stock market turmoil, and pushed the dollar to 94 against the Indian rupee. Iran has made clear that attacking power plants would provoke strikes on GCC countries including UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. The pause comes amid growing international pressure for de-escalation, though Israel’s response to the US announcement remains unclear.
