On day 25 of the West Asia conflict, uncertainty persists as US President Donald Trump claims back-channel talks with Iran are underway and announces a temporary pause on strikes. However, missiles and drones continue to devastate capacities from Tel Aviv to Tehran, and Iran has flatly denied any negotiations. Despite efforts by regional players like Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan to push for a ceasefire, the war shows no signs of ending. Trump dialled Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who communicated India’s support for de-escalation and restoration of peace. Modi emphasised that ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the whole world. Dr Melanie McAllister, Director of Institute for Middle East Studies at George Washington University, suggests Trump is trying to exit the war and declare victory as rising gas prices and domestic pressure mount. Iran holds critical leverage through its ability to control the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of global oil flows.
