US President Donald Trump’s appeal to NATO allies and other nations to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz has been widely rejected. Trump urged countries benefiting from the crucial energy corridor, including Japan, South Korea, China, and European nations, to assist the United States in securing the strait. He stated that the US receives less than 1 per cent of its oil from the strait, while Japan gets 95 per cent and China 90 per cent. However, key allies have declined. Germany outrightly stated this is not their war. France refused, citing fears of widening the conflict. Australia, Japan, and the United Kingdom also ruled out sending ships. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the Strait of Hormuz will not become a NATO mission and called for a swift resolution to bring down energy prices. China rejected military involvement and called for de-escalation. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Ararji said the strait remains open from Tehran’s perspective and is only closed to enemies. South Korea is reviewing the proposal.
