Once upon a time, Oval Office meetings were a coveted if boringly routine prize for world leaders looking to lobby the US President for favours or deals. Not any more. During Trump’s second term in power, such meetings have turned into a potential minefield for world leaders visiting the Oval Office. First, it was Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, whose Oval Office meeting with Trump ended so badly that he was driven out before the entrees could even be served. But several others followed such as Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Canada’s Mark Carney. The latest example of this Trump tactic was the meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Is this the new normal for Oval Office meetings?
