Donald Trump’s tariffs on 60 countries which he deems the "worst offenders", including 104% duties on China, have come into effect. The additional tariffs on China kicked in after Beijing refused to meet Trump’s deadline to withdraw retaliatory levies. Meanwhile, analysts have warned that financial markets will experience more swings up and down. This is induced by uncertainty over how long Trump’s stiff tariffs on imports. In Japan, the Nikkei index dropped above 5%, Singapore’s STI index slipped 2.4%, South Korea’s KOSPI index lost 1.8%, Hong Kong’s Hang Sen index slipped 0.4% and India’s Nifty 50 closed 0.61 per cent lower and Sensex ended 0.51 per cent lower at 73,847.15. The latest on the China versus US war, Xi Jinping has retaliated with 84% tariffs on US goods with effect from April 10, up from the 34% previously announced.
In the backdrop, several countries like including India are open to lowering tariffs on U.S goods. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said 50 countries had approached him to discuss how to achieve reciprocity. Greer has also pointed out that the America’s average tariff on agricultural goods is 5%, but India’s average tariff is 39%.India’s was earlier dubbed tariff king by Trump, however, both nations are now working on a trade deal that sweetens the pot for US and India. Meanwhile, RBI’s Monetary Policy Comittee meet was held earlier today. RBI has cut interest rates by 0.25%. The central Bank has also reduced repo rates from 6.25% to 6%, a second cut since February. It has also revised its quarterly growth estimates for FY26.
