Section 232 under a different Trade Act allows up to 50% tariffs on goods viewed as national security threats without congressional approval. For India, the shift from previously imposed 20-26% tariffs to 10% is beneficial and provides more leverage in bilateral trade negotiations. The expert advises India to proceed cautiously and adopt a wait-and-watch approach, noting that delays in trade negotiations favour India compared to countries that have already signed bilateral deals with higher tariffs.
