Top Court Denies Bail to Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam; 'Qualitatively Different Footing' Among Accused

In a major development in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, the Supreme Court has denied bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. India Today’s Legal Editor Nalini Sharma reports that the court distinguished their roles, stating they stand on a ‘qualitatively different footing’ from the other accused. While the bench observed that ‘mere violence is not an act of terrorism’, it found a prima facie case against Khalid and Imam. Meanwhile, five other accused, including Gulfisha Fatima and Meeran Haider, were granted bail. Reporter Shreya Chatterjee joins the coverage as the network tracks the implications of this verdict.
