The Supreme Court is set to hear petitions challenging the Election Commission’s special voter roll revision exercise in Bihar. Opposition parties like RJD and TMC have moved the court, alleging the process is rushed and may strip citizens of voting rights, potentially excluding people from backward communities, Dalits, and minorities. The BJP has accused the opposition of spreading misinformation. The EC has clarified that the first phase of revision is complete, with no changes to existing rules. Voters are required to submit documents by July 25, with draft rolls to be issued on August 1. The court hearing is scheduled for July 10, just months before the Bihar assembly elections. In another incident from Purnia, Bihar, five people were lynched to death and their bodies burned by local villagers on suspicion of practicing black magic. The incident occurred in Tet Gama village, with three accused arrested so far. Police are investigating whether the victims were killed before being burned or burned alive. The brutality has raised questions about law and order in Bihar, with opposition leaders criticizing the state government. Additionally, former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud has been occupying the official CJI residence for eight months after retirement, surpassing the standard six-month allotment period. While Chandrachud cites personal reasons including his daughters’ medical needs, the overstay has sparked debate about judicial privilege and propriety.
