As per a new report backed by the UN, the entire population of Gaza, around 2.1 million people, is on the brink of famine as the enclave continues to suffer an Israeli blockade. Around 1 in 5 in Gazans, around 500,000 people, are already facing starvation and sickness.
Food insecurity and illness have always been significant challenges in Gaza but the ongoing Israeli blockade, put in place on March 2, has only served to aggravate the situation further.
The UNRWA reported that it ran out of food in Gaza two weeks ago. Food supplies from other sources are also rapidly depleting and, as a result, food prices are spiking to dramatic levels. A sack of flour now costs 3000% more than it did in March. And it’s not just food. The Israeli blockade affects the supply of medicine, clean water and fuel.
