In an exclusive interview, Professor Robert A. Pape, a professor of political science at the University of Chicago and author of ‘Subtract the Escalation Trap,’ discussed the ongoing West Asia conflict on day 17. Despite the US flying over 6,000 combat flights and bombing over 15,000 targets across Iran, Pape argued that tactical success has not produced strategic victory. He stated, ‘Iran in day 17 is more dangerous and more powerful than before the first bomb fell.’ Pape explained that Iran now controls the Strait of Hormuz, which handles 20% of the world’s oil, and described President Trump’s request for NATO allies to join escort missions as ‘effectively an admission of failure.’ He warned that the US is getting trapped deeper in an escalation trap, with Iran exploiting America’s weakness in prolonged conflicts. Pape predicted a major global economic crisis with oil prices remaining high, potentially reaching $100 a barrel, which could have severe political consequences for the Republicans in midterm elections.
