At Mahindra Drivers Of Change, Pranav Vempati, Founder & CEO, Makers Hive, a deep tech bionic startup, shared how his team developed Kalaam, India’s first fully functional, affordable bionic hand. While bionic hands in the West cost upwards of 40 to 60 lakh rupees, Pranav’s team spent six years and about 28 to 30 crores to build a product at one-tenth the price. He credited inspiration from his mentor, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, who encouraged him to focus on solving India’s problems. Pranav explained that his team built everything indigenously, including EMG sensors that cost 10 to 12,000 rupees compared to 1.5 lakh rupees elsewhere. He introduced Vamshi, a beneficiary who lost his hand eight years ago and now lives independently, earning 30,000 rupees monthly. MakersHive is supplying bionic hands to the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Railways, ISRO, and major hospital chains. The company is also developing STHERA, a non-invasive device for Parkinson’s patients, aimed at costing less than one lakh rupees compared to deep brain stimulation surgeries that cost 25 to 35 lakh rupees.
