The LongForm Story: NH-2 Reopening And Arms-Down Pact Before PM Modi’s Visit To Manipur
In a significant effort to connect with the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Manipur, the Centre announced on Thursday that it has extended the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement with the Kuki-Zo armed groups. The Centre also secured a promise to allow Meiteis to travel freely on a vital national highway that links Imphal to Dimapur, according to ThePrint. The two communities have faced intense ethnic conflict over the last two years. With the PM expected to visit Churachandpur district in the hills, the SoO agreement’s extension, which involves a mutual suspension of activities between armed forces and tribal armed groups that are part of the pact, is viewed as an effort to ease tensions within the Kuki-Zo community. The pact was set to expire on 29 February 2024. Although NH-2 is technically open, Meiteis have refrained from using it due to security issues. Many choose to fly out of the state, which is often too expensive for them. The state government attempted to restore normal operations, but these efforts proved unsuccessful. As the PM plans to travel to Imphal from Churachandpur, the agreement from the Kuki-Zo Council to let Meiteis travel freely on NH-2 is seen as a crucial step in rebuilding their trust.
