Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, in a wide-ranging interview, addressed the complex relationship between the Congress-led UDF and the Left-led LDF in Kerala, stating they are friends at the national level but political opponents in the state. He made a significant claim that a 4% vote shift from the BJP to the CPM was the primary reason for the UDF’s defeat in the last assembly election. Chennithala also commented on party colleague Shashi Tharoor, calling him ‘a different bird, but he will remain in our cage’. He attributed the previous election loss to the COVID-19 pandemic, which he argued gave an advantage to the incumbent LDF government. The Congress leader affirmed that the party follows a tradition of not announcing a Chief Ministerial candidate before elections.
