The Business Today Show: GST Overhaul Sparks Market Rally, Cheaper Goods, Soaring Auto & FMCG Stocks

The GST Council, led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has enacted significant tax reforms, marking the largest overhaul since 2017, termed "GST 2.0." Effective September 22, 2025, the previous four-slab GST structure is replaced by a simplified system featuring two primary slabs of 5% and 18%, a nil rate for essential goods, and a 40% rate for sin and luxury items. This reform is set to reduce prices for numerous products, including household goods, food items, small cars, two-wheelers, agricultural machinery, and consumer durables like air conditioners and televisions. Life and health insurance premiums will now be exempt from GST. The announcement triggered a positive stock market reaction, with the Sensex and Nifty experiencing a gap-up opening and substantial gains in auto and FMCG stocks. The Business Today Show highlighted these historic GST reforms, noting rate cuts for mid-tier hotels and tractors, alongside an increased GST on coal. While an initial revenue shortfall is anticipated, the government expects the changes to boost consumption and the overall economy, with experts projecting a potential 0.5% GDP benefit. Discussions also covered the potential reduction in the government’s subsidy burden and further structural reforms under GST 2.0, aiming to ease compliance and counter global tariff shocks.
