In a panel discussion at the India Today Conclave, three European ambassadors to India—Dr Philip Ackerman of Germany, Antonio Bartoni of Italy, and Juan Antonio March Pujol of Spain—addressed the growing transatlantic tensions between Europe and the United States. German Ambassador Dr Ackerman stated clearly, ‘We don’t buy Russian oil, zero, not a drop of Russian oil,’ while criticising the US decision to lift price ceilings on Russian oil. He expressed concern that the Iran war has diverted attention from the war in Ukraine, which ‘costs hundreds of thousands of lives every week and every month.’ Ambassador Bartoni noted that Italy is providing air defense assets in the Gulf to protect its troops, while emphasising that ‘this is a war we didn’t want, we don’t participate in, and we will not participate in.’ Spanish Ambassador March called for diplomacy, saying the Spanish government’s position is ‘no to the war, yes to the peace.’ All three ambassadors expressed frustration at not being informed about the endgame of the Iran war and emphasised Europe’s limited influence despite suffering economic consequences from rising fuel prices and disrupted trade routes.
