Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman described the Karur stampede as "shocking" and said she visited the site and hospitals on the PM Modi’s advice. Accompanied by Minister L Murugan, she met families who lost loved ones and the injured. “I couldn’t even console the families, most are poor and grieving deeply,” she said. Sitharaman conveyed condolences from PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, adding she will report back to them after her visit. Both leaders had expressed their sorrow earlier via social media.
