Israel has claimed overnight airstrikes targeted top Iranian officials, including Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Israeli officials confirmed that Ghulam Reza Soleimani, head of the Basij paramilitary forces, was killed in the strike. It remains unclear whether Larijani was killed or injured. IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir said significant elimination achievements were recorded overnight with potential to impact the campaign. Israeli officials also claimed strikes targeted Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Akram al-Ajouri and other officials hiding in a safe house in Tehran. Israel believes eliminating these leaders will weaken Iran’s command and control structure. Larijani was spotted at the Quds Day rally in Tehran on 13 March and had emerged as a key nodal point for Iranian resistance post-Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death. Diplomatic correspondent Amitai Stein described the strikes as a huge attempt to target senior Iranian leadership and create conditions for Iranian protesters.
