A severe flood, reportedly caused by a cloudburst, has inundated the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple complex. The river, in a fierce spate since 5 AM on Tuesday, submerged the entire premises, including a well-known Hanuman statue. According to an eyewitness, the situation is unlike anything seen in centuries: “in the last four hundred to five hundred years, this kind of destructive form has never been heard of.” Priests and saints who were inside the temple were rescued with great difficulty but are safe. While the main sanctum sanctorum of the Bholenath temple is reported to be secure, significant damage has occurred, with the dome of a smaller Shiv temple being washed away. The full extent of the damage will be clear only after the water recedes. Fortunately, no loss of life has been reported from the temple.
