In an insightful session at the India Today Election Roundtable in Chennai, Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for IT and Digital Services, detailed the ‘Dravidian Model 2.0’. He contrasted this model with the ‘alleged Gujarat model’, arguing that Tamil Nadu prioritises social equity and human capital over capital expenditure-led growth. Thiaga Rajan highlighted the state’s economic success, noting that electronic goods manufacturing surged from $2 billion to $14 billion in three years. Addressing federal concerns, he pointed out a ‘precarious’ fiscal imbalance where Southern states contribute nearly 40% of union revenues but receive only 17% back. He defended the state’s stance on Hindi imposition and NEET, asserting that a ‘union of states’ must respect successful regional models. On corruption, he cited the Supreme Court’s electoral bonds judgment as evidence of ‘institutionalised corruption’ at the centre. Thiaga Rajan concluded that the Dravidian model’s strength lies in its 100% inclusion, particularly the high participation of women in the workforce compared to other states.
