The report states the syrup was produced in unsanitary conditions by a company that lacked the necessary skilled manpower, machinery, and facilities. The investigation found the presence of the industrial solvent diethylene glycol, which is used as a cheaper and more harmful alternative to propylene glycol. Propylene glycol, a low-toxicity industrial solvent, was also found; it can cause toxicity if consumed in large quantities. The use of diethylene glycol as a cheaper substitute in medicines is a known issue, and it is considered highly toxic, especially for children, potentially causing severe kidney damage and death. This report has prompted immediate regulatory action and wider health safety concerns.
